The Shocking Story of a Teen Gang’s Violent Assault and the Search for Justice

In other words, Jay Slater and his gang were spiraling downward into violence, and Tom Hilton happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Looking back, it was an event the community did recognize as having warnings, for there was indeed a general sense of unease and a growing concern for the safety of the town’s youth. Still, no one could have foreseen the degree of brutality that would take place on that August day.
III. Trial and Sentencing: In Search of Justice
The Prosecution:
Finally, after many months, well into the summer, the trial of Jay Slater, Danny Yakub, Connor Armstrong, and the five other gang members started appearing in court. In fact, the prosecution did have an unexpectedly very strong case, giving a minute-by-minute account of what happened that day and pointing out just how bad the victim’s injuries actually were. They pointed out thatloe premeditated it and intended the gang to cause him serious harm.
Witness testimonies, include that of the bystanders and also of the victim himself, gave a horrific description of the assault. The court heard that Tom had been chased, cornered, and brutally beaten. The prosecution, pointing to the principle of justice and deterrence, wanted him jailed for long.
The Defence:
The defense lawyers for the gang tried to downplay the severity of the attack and to argue that their clients did not intend to cause so much harm. They explained it as a teenager outburst of aggression, stating the gang members really felt sorry for their actions.
The defendants themselves betrayed absolutely no remorse during the trial, laughing and joking, which demonstrated a shocking lack of empathy for the suffering they caused.
