At least 127 people were killed after a plane crashed off the runway at South Korea’s Muan International Airport, hit a wall and burst into flames, the national fire agency said Sunday.
The flight, Jeju Air 7C2216, was coming from Bangkok, Thailand, carrying 181 passengers. It attempted to land at about 9 a.m. (0000 GMT), according to South Korea’s transportation ministry.
The tragedy is the deadliest aviation accident involving a South Korean airline in nearly 30 years and could potentially become the country’s worst air disaster, based on ministry records.
Local media footage showed the twin-engine Boeing 737-800 skidding off the runway without visible landing gear before crashing into a wall, causing an explosion of flames and debris. Additional images reveal thick smoke and engulfed parts of the aircraft.
